Real-life 9 to 5s: Spotlight on Alison Saunders

As we prepare for our Autumn production of 9 to 5 The Musical we decided to find out more about some of our wonderful cast and crew by discovering the way they make a livin’ in their real-life 9 to 5s. Next up is crew member Alison Saunders.

What is your job?

I am one of two Logistic Support Officers at First Days Children’s Charity. We support families with things like baby clothes, equipment, safe sleeping, uniforms and much more! It’s an awesome team and we’re all really passionate about what we do. The charity was founded 11 years ago (2013) and has unfortunately continued to see a rise in requests for support, which means that the team has had to expand to meet demand.

Tell me a little about what that entails day-to-day?

It keeps me active, that’s for sure! There’s always a lot going on, and things are constantly changing to adapt to what is donated or where the need is. You get used to the to-do list growing every day, but I love it! My regular activities include running volunteer shifts, supporting volunteers, ensuring everything we prepare for families is of the highest quality, maintaining health and safety standards, and hosting corporate volunteer teams. I also manage the stock of donations coming in and out and help provide low-cost uniforms to the community. One of the best things about being in a small team is the variety — no two days are the same.

How did you get into it?

I’ve always wanted to do something community focused; I started out as a Volunteer Receptionist after having a break in my employment for treatment for breast cancer. I thought it would be good for me to start using my brain a bit and get used to being more active after not having been for so long, plus they always say it’s good to have something current on your CV lol! I naturally ended up doing more on the operations/logistics side of the charity as that’s where my strengths are (something that translates well to stage management) and after about 7/8 months I was offered a role on the team.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I love that I am making a difference in people’s lives, and I love that my job is so varied and keeps me active (I cancelled my gym membership because this is my cardio!). The team are all really passionate about what they do, which makes the longer days easier to manage and means everyone has a common goal. I think you have to have a bit of a vocation to work in the charity sector, but it is so rewarding, that’s for sure!

What qualities or personality traits do you have that you think make you successful in your role?

You have to be compassionate, understanding, super-organised and willing to just get stuck in and get things done. It can be hard work but to know how much of a difference you are making is what makes it all worthwhile.

Do you have any tips for people who might like to do something similar?

Do it! Lots of charities offer volunteer roles, and it’s a great way to get noticed and be around when roles come up. Plus, it’s something to have on your CV while looking for a job. Just be prepared to potentially juggle a lot of plates!

If given the chance to do musical theatre for a living instead, would you take it?

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would seriously consider it. I LOVE being backstage at a show and the buzz is like nothing else! But doing it with an amateur society of such a high standard after doing it professionally for a while definitely helps.
