The Sainsbury Singers presented Thoroughly Modern Millie on 22-26 May 2012 at The Hexagon Theatre, Reading.
Based on the 1967 film of the same name that starred Julie Andrews, but with many changes to the musical numbers, the stage musical was first seen on Broadway in 2002 and in the West End in 2003.
The story follows the wide-eyed small-town girl Millie Dillmount who arrives in New York in the 1920s looking for money. What she uncovers is a flapper lifestyle that she loves, a boss that is eligibly rich but disinterested and a hostel that is geared to fast-track its incumbents into a life of white slavery. It all works out okay in the end though.
