Fiddler on the Roof

Fiddler on the Roof musical

The Sainsbury Singers presented Fiddler on the Roof on 25-29 April 2006 at The Hexagon Theatre, Reading.

The smash-hit musical that made Topol an international star.  Both the stage show and the 1971 film have continued to delight new generations.   A poignant story laced with humour, set  to traditional Jewish music.  A tale about a Jewish community in the Russian village of Anatevka during the last years of Tsarist rule.

Fiddler on the Roof musical

Tevye is the local milkman, scraping a living and doing his best to be true to the traditions of his race and religion.     He and his wife, Golde, have five daughters.  Tradition demands that each girl should be found a good match.  The oldest three, all of marriageable age, take turn to challenge Tevye’s beliefs and he finds himself torn in two – should love, and their happiness, win over tradition?

Throughout the story there is an ominous, dark cloud growing – as news of anti-Jewish demonstrations reaches the village – threatening their very existence.

Best known tunes include Tradition, Matchmaker, If I Were A Rich Man, Sabbath  Prayer, To Life, Miracle Of Miracles, Sunrise, Sunset, Do You Love Me? Far From The Home I Love and Anatevka
